About the Book

Carrying the Maldives

Twenty Years Between Home and the World

There is a photograph Shiruzimath Sameer does not have: a young woman standing at the edge of a jetty in Malé in 2006, suitcase in hand, suspended between the person she had been and the person she was about to become.

Carrying the Maldives is the memoir of that journey — twenty years spent representing a small island nation in rooms most people never see. From a classroom in Kuala Lumpur to the Security Council, from the invisible discipline of diplomatic drafting to a posting in Berlin, from a pandemic lockdown in Dhaka to at the United Nations in New York, this is a story told not through ceremony, but through the real texture of the work: the preparation before every meeting, the family separated by distance, the suitcase packed and repacked, always with the same deliberate care.

Shout out to a fellow woman diplomat who just published a book about representing the Maldives across the globe! (Fun fact: I went there for my honeymoon.)

Alicia Ford (@diplomatsthebook) United States

Wherever you are, read. Especially if that book comes from the pen of a friend — read it much more carefully. And if you, your family, and your other friends are actually in it, read every single line. Huge congratulations on your book! Thank you for sharing both your memories and ours.

Güner Ureya Former Ambassador, Kosovo

Just finished the book… Reading through, I can almost recall some of the moments you expressed and link them to the photos you had shared over the years. It's a really emotional read for me, Shiru… I'm always cheering for you. So many emotional parts in your book — I had to put the book down and cry!

Archun Malé, Maldives

I don't think I can do anything tonight but read this… already hooked. I've never read a biography or a memoir, and to read and come across names and incidents that are so real is euphoric. It felt more like a novel — maybe that's just me!! I didn't want to finish reading so quickly.

Shaany, the author’s cousin Malé, Maldives

I'm in tears!! Thank you for the book.

Bernd Framke Hannover, Germany

My heart is full seeing this book. It is beautiful, and I can't wait to read it. It reminds me of how things come full circle. May this be the beginning of many great works you do.

Zareen, Founder and CEO, HerStory — Dhaka, Bangladesh

Finally, your book arrived today! Already finished the first chapter — it's such a good read, and it reminds me of how I felt when I left Germany for work. I'm also interested to read the other chapters.
